Police said they had video of a man on foot who opened fire indiscriminately at a downtown intersection blocks from Lucas Oil Stadium, home of the new Indianapolis Colts jerseys, but had made no arrests by late Sunday.
Lt. Jeffrey Duhamell of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police said the victims' ages ranged age from Robert Mathis10 to 19. Most were taken to Wishard and Methodist hospitals and were listed in good condition Sunday. One was treated at the scene.
"We have to be mad as hell about this," said Charles Harrison, a United Methodist pastor who was standing a few feet from where the first shootings occurred. "This incident we cannot tolerate in our community."
Shots were fired in three locations after the conclusion of Saturday's events Reggie Wayne associated with the Expo, a 10-day event of entertainment, business networking and other activities.
Republican Mayor Greg Ballard and leaders of the Indianapolis community expressed outrage at the shootings. While stressing that the three shootings did not happen at any Expo-sanctioned events, they said the city will aggressively go after those who perpetrate violence at large public gatherings.
"Our job is to remove these people off the streets so that everybody can be safe here in the city of Indianapolis," Ballard said.
Duhamell said several shots rang out about 9:30 p.m. Saturday on Peyton Manning Maryland Street near Circle Center Mall, leaving eight people wounded and sending people running. He said a second shooting occurred minutes after the first and left one young man wounded in the leg. The third shooting occurred around 11:30 p.m. and left another man wounded, he said.
"It's pretty unusual to have this many shots in one time," Duhamell said.
NFL spokesman Greg Aiello confirmed via Twitter on Saturday afternoon that the Colts will be among seven teams featured on a training camp tour by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and Hall of Fame coach and former broadcaster John Madden.
"What a tribute to the city of Anderson, to Anderson University and to the Colts," city councilman Art Pepelea said.
Goodell and Madden will be riding the latter's luxury bus, dubbed the Madden Cruiser, over a period of six days in August.
Goodell's tour actually is slated to begin July 29 at the Green Bay Packers' annual shareholders' meeting. He'll then head to Louisiana on Aug. 2 for a visit with the Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints.
Madden joins the tour Aug. 3 with a trip to the Philadelphia Eagles' training camp. The pair will then visit the Baltimore Ravens and Washington Redskins on Aug. 4 and the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns on Aug. 5.
The bus will then make a detour to Canton, Ohio, for the Pro Football Hall of Fame festivities Aug. 6.
The next day Goodell and Madden are slated to visit AU and the Indianapolis Colts before returning to Canton for the Hall of Fame induction ceremony later that evening.
AU vice president of finance Senna Landey said she could not confirm Goodell's visit, but she had heard rumors it was possible.
"If it were to happen, it would be a great honor," Landey said. "We'd look forward to hosting him just as we do all of our fans."
The Colts made no public response to Aiello's Twitter post Saturday.
The commissioner's schedule is tentative, but the plan likely is to include a stop in Anderson unless unforeseen complications arise.
Goodell hopes to speak with players, staff and fans at each stop.
